Tasting Notes

A blend of fruit from 3 different vineyards from the best appellations across Niagara, the 2021 Pinot Noir is the epitome of the Leaning Post style. This wine combines classic “P(inot)-funk” flavours of cherry, blackberry, and raspberry with beet root, earth, leaves and fresh potting soil. Made in a style that is slightly more approachable than our single-vineyard Pinots, it still shows incredible depth and complexity. The incredibly supple mouthfeel, medium body and balanced acidity frame exceptional flavour intensity, leading to a long, sweeping finish the ends on a decidedly mineral and crunchy note. This wine will age for 4 to 5 years.

Winemaking Notes

This wine is a blend of 3 different vineyards from across Niagara. They were hand-picked and hand-sort on September 28th, 30th, and October 8th.  Each vineyard was fermented separately, with 25% whole-cluster fruit and 75% de-stemmed.  They were left to cold soak for 2 to 3 days before a spontaneous ferment started, followed by punch-downs by hand twice a day for 3 weeks.  Once fermentation was finished, the wine remained on skins for 3-5 days before being gently pressed.  It was then transferred to French oak barrels (25% new, 25% 1-year-old, 50% older) and aged for 15 months. The 2021 Pinot Noir was bottled in April, 2023.

An open and inviting pinot noir with great depth of flavour despite a lighter mouthfeel. Tannins contribute a modicum of grip and texture on the expansive palate that offers both fresh and dried cherry fruit, wildflower, tilled earth, iron, and very delicate wood spice. Some signs of maturity are beginning to set in and a touch of acetic acid is noted. Yet there is still tang and energy on the palate along with memorable length. Best now to 2025. Tasted September 2023.
