The 2019 Vintage was a short but sweet harvest. It was a cool spring and the cold weather rolled in at the being of November. We hand-picked and hand-sorted this fruit on October 29, 2019. The grapes were destemmed and left to cold soak on skins before fermentation started spontaneously 5 days after harvest. During fermentation, we did two punch-downs by hand every day until ferment had finished. We pressed off skins and filled 5 oak barrels, one new French, one new American and three old neutral barrel, where this wine aged for 20 months before being bottled on August 18, 2021.

A wine with a long track record and one that Ilya Senchuk has been making since 2012. Unfortunately and with best wishes to his family, the expert farmer of this tract (Les Keczan) recently passed away. Now in its true tenure in a sub-appellation that stretches all the way over to the Senchuk farm. These fruit flavours lend towards and open the door for the sanguine, meaty, gamy and peppery notes to walk straight on through. Another reason to speak freely, openly and lovingly about 2019 because age-ability and beauty walk hand in hand. This is already in a place that wants to be enjoyed with 10-plus years available to those who do what’s right. Drink 2023-2028. Tasted June 2022.

This has been made since 2012. The Syrah at this farm was being blended into a huge blend, so Ilya bought some. Peppery and bright, and so expressive with lovely cherry and plum fruit. There’s a black cherry quality, and some pepper, herb and iodine. This is fresh and pure with lovely precision and some red cherry and raspberry fruit, with elegance and precision and a tapering finish. So expressive. 94/100
