Tasting Notes

Combine an exceptional growing season with mature vines and meticulous hand-picking and sorting and you get a truly classic vintage of this wine! While certainly displaying the characteristic chalkiness and weight of the Twenty Mile Bench in Vineland, this wine shows more acid and restraint than in some warmer vintages. Pineapple, peach, lemon-curd and hazelnut immediately fill the nose, with hints of white flowers and honeysuckle poking through. The palate immediately brings chalk and mineral, backed by meringue, fresh cream, macintosh apples, cumin and roasted almonds. Texture and weight are phenomenal and are balanced by unusually good acidity leading to an incredibly long finish. Drink with lemon roasted chicken, semi-soft cheese, and freshly baked bread. It will age well for the next 5-8 years.

Winemaking Notes

A very cool spring was followed by a steady and cool growing season with just enough moisture to keep vines happy. The cool and steady weather continued into the autumn, allowing us to hang fruit well into the season without losing acidity or freshness. The fruit was amazingly clean, full-flavoured and high in acid with almost no sorting required. The grapes were whole-cluster pressed on October 10th 2019. Juice was naturally settled, then racked into barrel where fermentation occurred by indigenous yeast and malolactic bacteria. Once fermentations were completed, the wine remained in French oak barrique and 500-Litre pucheon without stirring of the lees for 13 months. This wine was lightly filtered and bottled on May 13th, 2021.

Quite a buttery and rich chardonnay with warmer climate location or unheralded vintage tucked safely within. Gelid lemon and smooth curd, a fixation of texture for the kind of wine that drinks with clay creaminess and tumbling stones in balance. This chardonnay is no accident but carefully calculated, curated and experienced. Last tasted blind at NWAC2022, June 2022. “A weirdly underrated vintage, to me one of the best we have had as a winery,” says Ilya Senchuk, "especially for chardonnay.” Fairly reductive so air and agitation is necessary or at least suggested, from a site rich in dense gravel, clay and chalky soil. Not the richest of chardonnay vintages but one of place, of terroir, of clay loam over the limestone, of balance between all parts. The syncopated linger is almost mesmerizing and this is chardonnay that makes you stare at a spot but at nothing. You can get lost in here and that is really special. I think therefore I chardonnay. Drink 2022-2026. Tasted June 2022.
