Take the time to stop and smell the 'Viognier'; a beautiful aromatic wine showing notes of fresh peach, tangerine, apricot, honeysuckle and lilac. This dry, medium-bodied wine has fresh, fruity flavours of peach and tropical fruit, lightly accented by floral notes. Lovely notes of tangerine, floral and spice linger on the finish. Serve chilled at 11 to 13ºC and enjoy with lightly spiced pan-fried fish fillets; roast chicken; baked ham; lightly spiced stir-fries over Jasmine rice; spiced fish cakes; coconut shrimp skewers; mild curry dishes; Tandoori turkey rolls.
A cool, wet spring gave way to a late start to the growing season, which led directly into a hot summer with a record breaking dry spell. This accelerated the ripening, bringing the fruit back on track. September brought cooler weather, slowing the ripening and allowing a good window for picking. This resulted in wines that are more balanced with lower alcohols and higher natural acidity. Overall, the 2017 vintage was lower in heat units than 2016 but still higher than average.
The soil at Osprey Ridge Vineyard has a higher pebble and gravel content than the pure sand of our vineyards to the south. This seems to allow Viognier to hang on the vine longer, for more intense floral perfumed characteristics and more fruit intensity.
