13th Street Winery has consistently been growing their wine portfolio and growing their brand. This year, they are celebrating their 20th anniversary and in addition to having award-winning wines, they have a bakery and a patio restaurant (in the warmer months) as part of the winery. Owned by the Mann and Whitty families in Niagara, the winery has been a family affair since inception. Jean Pierre Colas has been the winemaker for 13th Street Winery for much of the two decades that they have been in action, and is responsible for their ever growing list of awards. In JP's home country of France, he produced Wine Spectator Magazine's White Wine of the Year in 1998 for his Chablis at Domaine Laroche.
We were thrilled to taste 13th Street Winery's portfolio, and can say without a doubt that this month's wine club subscribers are in for a treat. Here are four of our favourites that will be in the wine club packages this month!
Nectarine, green apple, lemon and lime tempt the palate with undercurrents of lanolin and a touch of honey. This Riesling has subtle flavours that mesh very well together. This wine is a natural partner with fresh seafood - think crab cakes and mussels in white wine sauce, grilled white fish, and Indian or Asian curries with a bit of heat.
Red fruit tumbles out of the glass with this Gamay. Dark cherry, raspberry, strawberry jam, and a little kiss of cotton candy on the nose with violets and tobacco emerging more on the palate. This is a fantastic Gamay, 13th Street Winery is quickly becoming a leader in Gamay. You can pair this wine with almost anything - pesto-based pastas, pizza and, Guiness-and-beef pot pie come to mind!
This is a heavyweight favourite in terms of ageing and robustness, and we're incredibly pleased to include it in the wine club packages. Lovely aromatics of coffee, black pepper, red fruit, and leather with deeper flavours of roasted strawberry and cigar box on the palate. This wine is complex with excellent structure and balance. Succulent roasted pork, eggplant parmesan, moussaka, and charcuterie would be excellent food partners.
This is a lovely Merlot that we think is going to become the chosen "cottage red" this summer! With its aromatics and flavours of black cherry, plum, black pepper and savoury herbs, it's a natural match for BBQs and picnic fare. Other Valentine-approved foods to try with it are juicy roast beef, pizza, truffle frites, and fondue. Enjoy!
