Wine Club Canada Sue-Ann Staff Estate Featured Winery

We're excited to feature Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery this month. Established in 2009 on a family farm spanning 100 acres, the winery is the culmination of Sue-Ann Staff's extensive experience and passion for winemaking. Having previously been named Winemaker of the Year at the Ontario Wine Awards and shortlisted as one of the top Women in Wine globally, Staff brought her knowledge home to create a winery that reflects her heritage and innovative spirit.

Sue-Ann Staff is dedicated to crafting an exceptional range of wines including riesling, pinot gris, baco noir, and cabernet franc, with many named after cherished family members such as Robert’s Block Riesling and The Louie Pinot Gris. The grapes are grown on the Staff family's estate which span the Vinemount Ridge and Twenty Mile Bench sub-appellations, and features a thin layer of clay over stone, imparting distinct flavours to her wines. Staff’s global winemaking experience, including stints in Australia, France, Germany, Andorra, and South Africa, informs her techniques and ensures each bottle reflects the highest standards. The result is a portfolio of wines that embody both tradition and innovation, making Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery a standout in the Niagara region.

2019 The Louie Pinot Gris

Made from grapes grown in the Vinemount Ridge sub-appellation, this pinot gris emulates those of Alsace, France, with its fuller body and sumptuous character. It offers a toasty, peachy nose with oak spice leading to gorgeous stone fruit and lemon on the palate. Rated 90 points by Tony Aspler, it is beautifully balanced with a long, lingering finish and pairs well with salmon in lemon and dill sauce or herbed fried chicken.

2011 Robert’s Block Riesling

This aged riesling is a standout. Rated 90 points, it's drinking well now but will also age gracefully for another five years. Its distinct profile presents a citrus bouquet with hints of petrol followed by lime and honeyed grapefruit on the palate. Enjoy it with chickpea and avocado salad or Korean tacos with bulgogi beef.

2021 Bank Barn Baco Noir

This medium-bodied red features big, bold flavours of blackberry, cassis, and savoury green herbs with lively acidity and a round mouthfeel. Try it alongside grilled lamb burgers or honey-roasted beets for a delightful culinary experience. 

2020 Gritstone Cabernet

Named after the hardy stone from the original gristmill used by Staff's ancestors, this French- and American-oak aged cabernet franc has an intense blackcurrant and cedar bouquet. This wine is firmly structured with notes of redcurrant and blackcurrant, licorice, dark chocolate, and hints of black pepper on the palate. A lovely pairing with sausages with polenta and tapenade or Moroccan beef stew.
