Tasting Notes

This was a featured wine from October's Wine Club.

Name: 2011 Gravity

Winery: Flat Rock Cellars

Geographical Indication: Twenty Mile Bench, ON

Variety: Pinot Noir

Vineyard: Estate vineyard

Alcohol: 12.5%

Cases Produced: 640

Appearance: Clear, medium ruby core.

Nose: Clean, medium intense characters of ripe cherry, cherry licorice, red apple skins, and baking spice.

Palate: Dry, medium+ acid, medium tannins, medium body, medium+ intense characters of cherries, ripe raspberries, cranberries, vanilla, and fresh herbs.

Quality: This is very good quality Pinot Noir with a nice concentration of fruit and spice, as well as an emphasis on structure that makes it well suited to drink alongside food. It's capable of 3-5 years of age, the tannins will soften and more earthy layers will evolve.

Food pairings: Beef roast with sautéed mushrooms, coq au vin, roasted vegetables (beets, parsnips, onions), roasted quail with thyme and oregano, lamb tagine.

Wine Writer’s Comment:
Gravity is the Flat Rock Cellars' flagship Pinot Noir that draws from the best plots in the vineyard and the best barrels in the cellar. Pinot Noir is one of only a handful of grapes that Ed Madronich has championed for growing in Niagara. He believes it can make great wine and ripen consistently. The grapes for Gravity are fermented using mostly wild yeast and aged eighteen months in French oak barrels. The name 'Gravity' comes from the gentle process of flowing the wine from barrel to bottle without using any pumps, which could expose the wine to oxygen. What emerges is a medium bodied wine with dark fruit characters and enough structure to give it a great aging potential.
