Variety: Cabernet Franc 60%, Cabernet Sauvignon 40%

Appearance: Clear, medium intense garnet.
Nose: Clean, medium+ intense characters of cherry, raspberry, blackberry, pencil shavings, and hints of spearmint.
Palate: Dry, medium+ acid, medium grippy tannins, medium alcohol, medium body, medium+ intense characters of raspberry, blackberry, cinnamon gum, and menthol.
Quality: This is a very good quality Bordeaux blend with excellent balance. The tannins are present, yet not overbearing. The mint and spice characters add a layer of complexity. This is drinking great now, but will hold for 2-3 years.
Food pairings: Roasted lamb with mint sauce, lamb tagine, venison sausages, barbequed brisket, braised red cabbage, aged cheddars like Lindsay Bandaged Goat Cheddar
Wine Writer’s Comment:
The GreenLane 2013 Cabernet is one of the best values I've come across this year. This vintage blends Cabernet Franc (60%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%) to make an elegant and structured Bordeaux blend. A wine for under $20 with such lovely balance and layers of complexity is a rare find. Winemaker Diane Smith has struck the right balance between the structure, dark fruit and herbal notes of the Cabernet Franc and the juiciness and spiciness of the Cabernet Sauvignon. There are subtle characters (ie pencil shavings) that suggest barrel aging in French oak. This wine should please novice and experienced wine drinkers alike, particularly if served alongside summer barbeque fare.
