The south facing slope of Kacaba's Proprietor's Block capture the full days sun and produce award quality fruit used to create this estate Syrah. White pepper, black fruit and cigar box prevail on the nose. The palate is rich with jammy strawberry and blackberry accented by spicy notes of licorice, clove, and leather.

Critic's Rating
Very deep intense purple colour. Lovely, rich, complex, ripe, faintly smoky, black cherry purée nose with some cassis-tinged, gently cedary notes. Dry, medium-full bodied, rich, wonderfully ripe, rounded, complex, plum-cassis-black/red-cherry flavours was long lingering, lifted, faintly smoky, bright, well-textured finish. Wonderfully harmonious, extracty and ready-to-drink, but can still age. It has 13.8% alcohol and 3 g/L residual sugar. It has 10% Viognier added and was aged for 17 months in French and American oak (52% French and 48% American/ 17% new). A bargain at the price - my highlight!Â

You would not think 2019 to be a year for Syrah; but if you were one of the first to plant the grape, that makes your material old vines, and here that helps. Here Syrah was combined with 10% Viognier, all estate grown, then aged in a mix of American and French oak for 17 months, giving the wine elements of floral and hints of fruit sweetness in the process. Peppery and smoky notes lead things off, before the fruit really kicks in: raspberry, blackberry and creme de cassis ... One of the earliest champions of syrah in Ontario, Kacaba continues to do well with the grape variety. Made in a dry and savoury style, this has an appealing peppery fragrance with dark fruit and cedar notes. It’s nicely concentrated with serious weight and complexity.
