The 2014 Portage Chardonnay is sourced from three premium Prince Edward County vineyards. Hand harvested in early to mid-October, the grapes were then gently whole bunch pressed, and the juice cold settled for 24 hours. Fermentation took place in a mix of new and seasoned French oak barriques and puncheons, with a combination of wild and cultured yeasts to contribute complexity. 80% of the barrels underwent malolactic fermentation, and battonage was carried out every two weeks. Following ten months in barrel the wine was blended to stainless steel tank, and then filtered and bottled without fining. Citrus fruit forms the core of the 2014 Portage Chardonnay, with well-defined lemon juice and zest notes showing through. Aromas of flint and wet stones add a mineral aspect, and hints of white flowers and baking spices add further complexity. On the palate the same array of flavours are present, as well as hints of white peach and lemon curd. The wine has a steely texture and crisp acidity, and this freshness is well complimented by subtle oak spice and creamy yeast derived flavours.
