Sheer veneer of bold, spicy and heavy laden aromas in this dry as a dusty desert Syrah. Quite a mouthful of syrup, anything but simple and striking in layers of viscosity and unctuous behaviour. West coast tattoos and sun-kissed skin swell, thick juice fills every tide pool and this is just fantastically a wine that turns cartwheels and jumps with joy...The desert likes Syrah and Syrah likes the desert. Drink 2016-2020. Tasted August 2015. Michael Godel
The style change between the 2012 and 2013 Painted Rock syrah is a study in vintage variation, and perhaps shifting philosophy. In any case the 2013 is a wine of more finely detailed nuances, certainly still tightly wound in the reductive house style, but already wonderfully perfumed in the typical cool climate register of cracked white and black pepper, lavender and mediterranean scrub. Tannins are finely woven and neatly stitched, acids are lively and crisp and the length lingers nicely...Fine stuff. Tasted August 2015. John Szabo
