The Story of Leaning Post
Leaning Post is owned and operated by husband and wife, Ilya and Nadia Senchuk. They had a dream of starting their own winery and in 2011, the couple purchased a farmhouse located on 11 acres of land in Stoney Creek. The property included an abandoned vineyard and a barn that was in disrepair. But through hard work and determination, the two took their newly acquired property and their lofty ambitions and transformed them into Leaning Post, an award-winning Canadian winery. It just so happened that this abandoned vineyard turned out to yield delicious fruit, a prime location for growing chardonnay and pinot noir grapes, which Leaning Post has become known for.
Leaning Post’s Approach
Leaning Post specializes in small-scale, artisanal winemaking with minimal intervention. The winery places emphasis on sustainability as well and is Sustainable Winegrowing Ontario Certified. Leaning Post is dedicated to creating wines that reflect the land where it was grown. They believe it is the soul of their winemaking. This specific focus on creating appellation and sub-appellation specific wines has led them to source fruit from a few unique sites across the Niagara Peninsula: Senchuk Estate, Grimsby Hillside, Keczan, Hemeris, and Bock Vineyards.
What’s Inside Your May Wine Club Box?
Here are a few of the highly-rated wines you can expect in your Wine Club package this month.
2021 Chardonnay
A blend of grapes from three outstanding vineyards, this chardonnay is beautifully balanced with well-integrated oak. The nose offers vibrant notes of toast, backing spice, and vanilla. On the palate, sumptuous flavours of green apple, peach, and hints of flint and hazelnut. A long, silky finish and crisp acidity make this a standout vintage. Rated 93 points by Tony Aspler, pair this with wild mushroom and pancetta risotto, crab carbonara with lemons and capers, or one-pan sage-and-onion sausage.
2024 Sauvignon Blanc
Rated 91 points, this new release has a classic grassy, green plum bouquet followed by bright notes of gooseberry, honeydew, and lemongrass on the palate. It’s crisply dry with a hint of minerality on the finish. Refreshing and vibrant, enjoy this sauvignon blanc alongside seared trout with lemon and parsley, apple and chicken mini hand pies, or tomato and asparagus quiche.
2022 Pinot Noir
Crafted from top Niagara Peninsula vineyards, this pinot noir captures Leaning Post’s signature style. Aromas of violets, raspberry, and hints of earth lead into a silky, medium-bodied palate with layers of red fruit, toast, and forest floor. Elegant and expressive, this red wine has excellent aging potential. Try it with pan-seared duck breast with plum coulis, bacon-stuffed mushrooms, or beef rib roast.
2021 Cuvée Winona
This merlot-dominant red blend is rich and expressive. Its cedary, toasty nose of black plum and blackcurrant is mirrored on the palate alongside hints of licorice and black pepper. A great pairing with Mexican picadillo with black olives, red beet Wellington, or pappardelle with lamb ragù.
