Frisky Beaver Wines comes out of a small estate in Norfolk County, on the north shore of Lake Erie, about an hour past Niagara. Every bottle carries a pun for a name: easy-drinking reds, off-dry whites, a blush-style rosé and a couple of sparkling options round out the lineup. None of it takes itself seriously.
Order it through My Wine Canada and it ships straight from the winery to your door, the same way every bottle on the marketplace does.
The lineup runs light and approachable across the board. Badass Baco is a smoky, dark Baco Noir built for hearty food. Blushing Beaver splits the difference between red and white, food-friendly and easy to chill down for a picnic. The off-dry side runs through Riesling, poured as Ravishing Riesling, and a white blend called Frisky White. Blushing Bubbles brings a pink, gently sparkling option to the table. Most of it is VQA-certified Ontario wine, grape to bottle, with one exception: Virgin Beaver, a sparkling apple-and-peach wine that swaps grapes for orchard fruit.
Frisky Beaver is the cheeky side of an Ontario estate grower called Smoke and Gamble, out on the north shore of Lake Erie in Norfolk County. That puts it in Ontario's Southwest, a smaller and less-travelled wine region an hour or so beyond Niagara.
The brand leans all the way into the pun. Badass Baco, Dam Good Red, and Bubbly Beaver are exactly the kind of labels you would expect, and that is the whole idea.
Lake Erie fruit, a wink included
Under the jokes is real cool-climate winemaking. The wines are Ontario VQA, made from grapes like Baco Noir, Riesling, Vidal, and Cabernet Franc grown on the Lake Erie north shore.
Some bottlings use appassimento, drying the grapes before pressing to concentrate them, a nod to Norfolk County's history of tobacco kilns. Frisky Beaver also launched what it calls Ontario's first VQA wine in a bottle made from recycled paper.
Frequently asked questions
What is Frisky Beaver?
Frisky Beaver is a playful, good-value Ontario VQA wine brand made by the Smoke and Gamble estate in Norfolk County. Think approachable bottles with tongue-in-cheek names like Badass Baco and Dam Good Red.
Where is Frisky Beaver made?
On the north shore of Lake Erie in Norfolk County, Ontario, not in Niagara. It is part of Ontario's Southwest, a cooler and quieter wine region than the better-known Niagara Peninsula.
Is Frisky Beaver serious wine or just a funny label?
Both. The label is tongue-in-cheek and the winemaking is real. It is VQA-certified, some of it made with the appassimento drying method, and the brand even launched an Ontario VQA wine in a recycled paper bottle. The humour is just the hook.
