Henry of Pelham Estate Winery
Henry of Pelham's Baco Noir is dark and full-bodied, the kind of red that gets better after a few years in the cellar. The Short Hills Bench winery also pours crisp Riesling, Cuvée Catharine sparkling aged in bottle before release, and icewine made from grapes picked frozen off the vine. Every bottle ships straight from the winery to your door.

What's in the Henry of Pelham range
Old Vines Baco Noir is the one to reach for first. Past vintages have picked up hardware too: the 2023 Old Vines Baco Noir won bronze at the National Wine Awards of Canada. The Speck Family Reserve Baco Noir comes from the estate's oldest vineyards, shovel-planted by the Speck brothers in 1984. A separate single-vineyard Riesling, Dry River, comes from its own block. Cuvée Catharine spends two to two and a half years in bottle on the lees before disgorging, the Chardonnay-Pinot Noir ratio flipping between the Brut and the Rosé Brut. Icewine comes in two styles: a Riesling and a Cabernet Franc red called Red Icewine.
Why the Short Hills Bench matters
The winery sits on the Short Hills Bench, a sub-appellation of the Niagara Peninsula. The soil here was left behind by retreating glaciers. The Dry River Riesling's home vineyard runs along a tributary of Richardson's Creek and carries a Mosel grape clone, but the clay isn't the slate you'd find in Germany. That mismatch is what gives the wine its citrus and stone-fruit character.

The story behind Henry of Pelham
Few Canadian wineries can trace their land as far back as Henry of Pelham. The Short Hills Bench property connects to a 1794 Crown land grant given to the Speck brothers' ancestor, Henry Smith, for service in the American Revolutionary War.
Paul Speck Sr. bought the parcels in 1982 and planted the first vines in 1984, with the first vintage in 1988. His three sons, Paul, Matthew, and Daniel, have run the estate since the early 1990s.
Baco Noir and Bench sparkling
No Canadian winery has done more for Baco Noir, a hardy hybrid grape most producers ignore. The Speck Family Reserve Baco Noir is the wine people come looking for, big and dark and unmistakably Niagara.
Alongside it are the Cuvee Catharine traditional-method sparklings and estate Riesling and Chardonnay off the Short Hills Bench. The winery has farmed to Sustainable Winegrowing Ontario standards since 2004.
