The story behind Ravine Vineyard

The Lowrey family has farmed this St. Davids land since 1867, and planted some of the area's first grapevines back in 1869. Wine is only the latest chapter on ground that has grown crops for over 150 years.

The modern estate winery opened in 2008 on the 34-acre organic property, on the St. Davids Bench near Niagara-on-the-Lake. Farming and food have stayed at the centre of it.

Organic estate, farm to table

Ravine makes small-lot VQA wines and farms on organic and biodynamic principles. Winemaker Jay Johnston has worked across many of Niagara's respected estates and brings that experience to the St. Davids Bench fruit.

The estate reaches past the cellar. The farm-to-table restaurant bakes its own bread, raises its own pigs, and grows its own organic vegetables, so a visit is as much about the food as the wine.
