Reif Estate is one of the founding family wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake, established in 1982, with the vineyard first planted in 1977.
The 125 acres sit in the Niagara River sub-appellation, where air moving off the river holds off spring and autumn frost and stretches the season out. It is Ontario's warmest sub-appellation, so the reds come out fuller. Some of the oldest vinifera plantings in Canada are here.
Every bottle ships straight from the winery.
The Reif family has made wine for many generations, tracing its roots back centuries to Neustadt, Germany. Ewald Reif brought that lineage to the Niagara River, buying land in 1977 and opening the winery in 1982.
His nephew Klaus Reif, trained at Germany's Geisenheim wine school, runs it today. It is one of Niagara-on-the-Lake's original family wineries.
The estate sits right along the Niagara River, a warm pocket that suits both aromatic whites and Bordeaux reds. Reif made its first icewine in 1984 and has been known for it ever since.
Icewine, Riesling, Chardonnay, and structured reds anchor the range, all from estate fruit. The winery is certified under Sustainable Winegrowing Ontario, and its icewines have taken major international awards.
