Black Prince is one of the older wineries in Prince Edward County, on a 50-acre estate at the edge of Picton.

The 10-acre vineyard carries Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and a few hybrids. They were the first in the County to age wine in barrels made from local oak. The name comes from Edward the Black Prince, who ruled Aquitaine, and Aquitaine included Bordeaux.

The story behind Black Prince Winery

Black Prince opened in Picton in 2001, one of the earliest wineries in Prince Edward County. John Sambrook and winemaker Geoff Webb built it on the edge of town, on a 50-acre estate.

The name goes back to Edward, the Black Prince, a fourteenth-century English commander who ruled Aquitaine, the part of France that holds Bordeaux. A wine connection hides inside the history.

County Chardonnay, County oak

Chardonnay leads the way here, grown on the estate vineyard along with Pinot Noir, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, and more. The County's limestone soils give the whites their tension.

Black Prince also tried something unusual for the region, ageing its Chardonnay in barrels made from local Prince Edward County oak. It was a small idea with a big point: County wine, County wood.
