Carone is a small estate winery in the LanaudiĂšre valley, on the St. Lawrence northeast of Montreal.

Quebec is a hard place to ripen red grapes, which is what makes a winery built around reds worth a look. Production is limited and goes out under four labels: Venice, Double Barrel, Bin 33 and VeritĂ .

The story behind Vignoble Carone

Carone is a Quebec winery with an unusual mission: to make serious red wine in one of the country's coldest wine regions. The family has held the Lanoraie land since the 1980s, when Peter Carone began testing which grapes could survive the winters.

His son Anthony turned that experiment into a commercial winery in 2000, and has been researching cold-climate grapes since 1995.

Serious reds in a cold climate

Most Quebec wine is white or made from hardy hybrids, so Carone stands out for chasing red wine in the Lanaudiere region northeast of Montreal. It grows cold-hardy grapes like Frontenac and Marquette alongside Pinot Noir.

The flagship is Venice, and Carone is credited with releasing the first 100 percent Quebec-grown Pinot Noir. Its wines have won medals that are rare for Quebec reds.
