Gold Hill Winery farms the Golden Mile Bench near Oliver, in the South Okanagan, and built its name on Cabernet Franc. The range splits two ways. There's an easy-drinking Charisma line of reds and whites for everyday pouring, and a handful of single-vineyard or Estate bottlings meant for the cellar. Beyond the home vineyard

Cabernet Franc and the Grand Vin blend come off the home Estate on the Golden Mile Bench, the warmest corner of the South Okanagan. The whites tell a different story. Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris both come from Mirror Lake Vineyard, a kettle lake in Oliver formed by glacial melt. Lake breezes there help slow the ripening down. The Chardonnay comes from a separate, higher vineyard. The Charisma Cab Merlot draws on a vineyard in Osoyoos. The Pinot Noir travels furthest of all, grown at Lake Bluff Vineyard in West Kelowna, on old lakebed soil. The reds still start from that one estate block, but the rest of the range has spread well past it.

Two ways to drink Gold Hill

Reach for a Charisma bottle on a weeknight that doesn't deserve ceremony, good with pizza or a bowl of pasta. Save the Estate wines, Grand Vin especially, for a dinner that actually earns the good glasses. The Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay both suit BC seafood. The Pinot Noir wine is lighter, built for blue cheese or a bolognese pasta rather than a heavy roast.

The story behind Gold Hill

Gold Hill is a Gill family winery, started in 2009 on the Golden Mile bench near Oliver. The Gill brothers came to the Okanagan from Punjab, India, in the 1980s to join family already farming the valley.

They planted a 24-acre estate high on the fruit bench and set out to make honest, well-priced reds.

Cabernet Franc, above its price

Cabernet Franc is the flagship, grown entirely on the estate and aged around 18 months in French oak. There is a top blend called Grand Vin, plus Merlot, Syrah, and Pinot Gris.

Winemaker Val Tait, with three decades in the valley, has made the estate Cabernet Franc every year since the first vintage. That first 2009 Cabernet Franc won a Lieutenant Governor's Award, one of BC's top wine honours.
