The story behind Ridge Road
Ridge Road sits on a family farm in Stoney Creek that has been held since 1875, at the western edge of the Niagara Escarpment. Sean and Jayne Douglas planted the vineyard in 1994, on land bought from Jayne's grandmother.
Sean started out as an enthusiast winemaker before turning it into a small commercial estate. It is one of the westernmost wineries on the Escarpment, away from the busier Bench.
Small-batch, off the beaten path
This is a small, artisanal operation, with wines made in tight batches and priced to be opened, not saved. The vineyard grows Chardonnay, Riesling, and Cabernet Franc, along with hardy Vidal and Baco Noir.
The range runs from reds and whites to rose and sparkling, including a bubbly built on the aromatic Traminette grape. It rewards a detour off the main wine route.
