The story behind Stoneboat Vineyards

A stoneboat is a low sled once used to drag rocks off a field, which is exactly what the Martiniuk family did to clear this stony ground near Oliver. Lanny Martiniuk, a longtime Okanagan vine grower, started the winery and released its first vintage in 2005.

Since 2021 the estate has been run by Kyla Richey and Rudy Verhoeff, both former Team Canada volleyball players, who took over the family project on the Black Sage Bench.

A Pinot house, and a rare grape

Stoneboat has always leaned toward Pinot, from Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris to Pinot Noir. The traditional-method Piano Brut, a sparkling wine off older Home Vineyard vines, is a longtime favourite.

The winery is also the name most tied to Pinotage in BC, a South African cross that almost nobody else grows here. Lanny Martiniuk propagated and planted it when it was practically unknown in Canada.
