Clos du Soleil is a small estate winery on the Upper Bench of the South Similkameen Valley, one of the least-known wine regions in British Columbia.

The wines are made in a Bordeaux style. The name points at the mountain behind the property, which closes the site off to the north and traps the heat and reflected light the vines need to finish ripening.

The story behind Clos du Soleil

Clos du Soleil started in 2006, when Spencer Massie, a retired Royal Canadian Navy officer, and a group of friends planted a bench of prime ground near Keremeos. This is the Similkameen Valley, a quieter neighbour to the Okanagan, hemmed in by mountains.

From the beginning the plan was organic farming and Bordeaux-style wine, an unusual bet in a young BC region. It has aged well.

Organic wine, Bordeaux at heart

The estate is certified organic and farmed with biodynamic methods, and it grows all the classic Bordeaux grapes. Winemaker Michael Clark, who came to wine from theoretical physics, keeps the winemaking precise and small-lot.

Two wines anchor the range. Signature is the flagship red, a barrel-aged Bordeaux blend, and Capella is its white counterpart, built mostly on Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.
