The story behind Monte Creek

Monte Creek is a ranch winery in the Thompson Valley, about ten minutes east of Kamloops, British Columbia. Gurjit Sidhu, a Fraser Valley berry grower, bought the large ranch property in 2007, and after blueberries struggled in the dry, near-desert climate, the family turned to grapes.

The first vines went in around 2010, one of British Columbia's earliest big plantings of winter-hardy grapes, and the winery opened to the public in 2015. It is now one of the Thompson Valley's most established wineries, set above the Trans-Canada Highway.

Cold-hardy grapes on a working ranch

The Thompson Valley is colder than the Okanagan, so Monte Creek built its identity on hardy grapes that can take a deep freeze, led by Marquette, La Crescent, and the Frontenac family, along with Marechal Foch. Warmer slopes also carry vinifera such as Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Noir, and the winery makes small-batch fruit wines too.

Galen Barnhardt has led the winemaking since 2014, working estate vineyards that straddle the Thompson River. The estate earned organic certification in 2023, farming across its Thompson Valley and Similkameen sites.
