Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery

Sprucewood Shores began in 1991, when Hannah and Gord Mitchell planted their first vines on the Lake Erie shore.

By 1996 it had grown to 35 acres, and the winery opened in 2006 among a stand of old spruce. It is the rare Ontario winery you can walk out of and onto a beach. Their four children run it now, with Tanya Mitchell as winemaker. The whites come out crisp, the reds soft and balanced.

Two distinct lines, side by side

Most of the range is straightforward estate wine. Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, unoaked Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio cover the whites. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir cover the reds, with a Meritage blend under the Hawk's Flight Reserve label for something more serious. Alongside that sits a flavoured line for a different occasion entirely: strawberry and lychee in Chillin' Dylan, strawberry and passion fruit in Sweet Eloise, a raspberry and grape Caboom! you can pour cold or warm, and a cinnamon-spiced Warm 'n Cozy, a stovetop pour on its own. Check the label before you order. One drinks like table wine. The other is closer to dessert.

Picking a bottle from the Lake Erie shore

Start with the Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc for something crisp and food-friendly, or the unoaked Chardonnay for a rounder white. On the red side, the Pinot Noir brings bright cherry and strawberry fruit. The Cabernet Sauvignon is full-bodied and dry, and the Merlot Hawk's Flight Reserve carries its own robust tannin, both suited to a rich meal rather than easy sipping. Can't decide? The Meritage Hawk's Flight Reserve blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot into one bottle. Riesling is the safest first pour if you've never tried the estate before.

The story behind Sprucewood Shores

The Mitchell family has held this land near Harrow since 1975, first planting grapes in 1991 and selling the fruit before making their own wine. The first Sprucewood Shores vintage came in 2004, and the winery opened to visitors in 2006.

It sits right on Lake Erie, and that is its signature. Sprucewood Shores has a private sandy beach, which makes it Ontario's only true beachfront winery.

Lake Erie North Shore, the warm south

This is Canada's most southern mainland wine region, on roughly the same latitude as northern California, with a long warm season that ripens reds well. Sprucewood Shores works estate fruit into Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Riesling, and Pinot Grigio, all Ontario VQA.

Winemaker Tanya Mitchell has made every vintage since the first, aiming for balance between fruit, acidity, and finesse. The reserve wines carry the Hawk's Flight label.
