Trail Estate is a Prince Edward County winery working at the natural end of the spectrum.

Mackenzie Brisbois makes the wine with wild ferments, leaving many bottlings whole and unfiltered, with no added enzymes or tannin. Skin-ferment Riesling, orange wine, pét-nat and unfiltered Chardonnay all come out of here. No wine is the same twice, which is rather the point.

The story behind Trail Estate

Trail Estate began when former Cambridge bakers Anton and Hildegard Sproll planted a small Hillier vineyard in 2011 and opened the winery in 2014. Their son Alex helps run it now.

It quickly became one of Prince Edward County's leading natural-wine addresses, well before the style caught on more widely in Ontario.

Natural wine, made hands-off

Winemaker Mackenzie Brisbois works with wild yeast, little or no added sulphur, and no fining or filtering. The wines are made to show what the fruit and the ferment actually do.

The range is genuinely experimental for the County: extended-skin-contact orange wines, sparkling pet-nat, and piquette, alongside more familiar Chardonnay and Riesling. One of its Chardonnays has taken gold at the Decanter World Wine Awards.
