Cabernet Franc is the grape Canada has the strongest claim to. Niagara ripens it properly, with red fruit, a green herbal edge and real structure underneath.
Pinot Noir wants a cold climate and gets one here. Prince Edward County grows it over limestone. The Okanagan gives it more flesh.
Gamay is the weeknight answer: bright, low on tannin, happy slightly chilled, easy next to salmon or a roast chicken.
Cabernet Sauvignon needs heat, so it comes almost entirely from the south Okanagan. Darker and firmer than most reds here.
Baco Noir barely exists outside Ontario. Smoky, dark, a little rustic.
Merlot, Syrah and Malbec fill in the rest.
What a short growing season does
Vintage swings more here than it would somewhere warm. One cool August and a wine comes in leaner than the year before, so the year on the label is worth a glance.
The region on the label tells you more here than it would elsewhere. The warmer south Okanagan carries the Cabernets and the Syrah. Niagara and Prince Edward County, cooler and closer to the water, do the Cabernet Franc, the Gamay and the Pinot Noir.
Pick a weight, not a grape
Nearly everything here is dry, so dry red wine is less a niche than a starting point. For dinner with real weight, steak, short ribs, a stew that has been going since noon, go full-bodied red wine instead. Plenty of the best drinking sits under $30.

No. A cool, dark spot around 12 to 15 degrees Celsius does the job, a closet or the back of a cupboard works fine. Lay the bottle on its side so the cork stays damp.
Should red wine be decanted before pouring?
Worth doing for anything full-bodied, like a Cabernet Sauvignon or an aged bottle. Thirty minutes in a jug softens the tannin and opens up the aroma. A lighter Gamay or Pinot Noir does not need it.
