The story behind 50th Parallel

Curtis Krouzel and Sheri-Lee Turner-Krouzel built 50th Parallel from bare land in Lake Country, at the north end of the Okanagan Valley. The first wines came out in 2011, and a purpose-built, gravity-fed winery followed in 2014.

The name is a nod to the estate's latitude, near the 50th parallel, which puts it among the more northerly vineyards in the valley. That cool northern edge is exactly what they were after.

Cool-climate Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is the reason 50th Parallel exists. The founders picked the site after soil testing specifically for cool-climate reds, and Pinot makes up a large share of the estate plantings.

The estate built its early reputation with winemaker Grant Stanley, a noted Pinot specialist who had worked at Quails' Gate and at Ata Rangi in New Zealand. The top bottling, Unparalleled, is the barrel selection, and the estate also makes traditional-method sparkling wine, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer.
