What you'll find under $30

A lot of what's here is VQA wine, made from grapes grown in Canada and held to a real quality standard. Reds lean Cabernet Franc, Gamay, Pinot Noir and easy-drinking blends. Whites lean Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. Rosé and a handful of sparkling pours round out the grid, mostly from Niagara and Okanagan producers. Most of it is meant to be opened without a special occasion.

How to choose without overthinking it

If you already like a grape, stay in the same family. Someone who drinks Sauvignon Blanc usually likes Riesling too. Undecided? Pick by region instead: a bottle from Beamsville Bench and one from Naramata Bench taste nothing alike, and trying both tells you more about your own preference than a label ever will. Once you've settled on a lane, the red wine, white wine and rosé wine collections sort the rest by colour, and wine under $50 is there if $30 starts feeling tight.

Yes, especially from a winery the person's never heard of. Skip the biggest brand name and look for one with a good label story. A VQA producer nobody expects feels like a genuine find worth bragging about at dinner.

Drink them now. Almost everything at this price is made for early drinking within a year or two of the vintage, so plan to pour what you buy this season instead of ageing it.
