The story behind Black Hills

Black Hills was founded in 1996 by the Tennant and McCarrell families, who planted vines on the hot, sandy Black Sage Bench near Oliver. Three years later they released the first vintage of Nota Bene, and the wine became a legend almost overnight.

Nota Bene turned into one of Canada's original cult wines. The 2006 vintage reportedly sold out in 47 minutes on release, and new vintages still disappear fast.

Bordeaux blends off the Black Sage Bench

The estate sits on the Black Sage Bench, some of the warmest ground in the country, which is why Bordeaux reds ripen so well here. Nota Bene is the flagship, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc built to age.

Black Hills also makes Alibi, a white blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, and is one of very few Canadian wineries to bottle a single-varietal Carmenere. Winemaking today is led by Ross Wise, who earned the Master of Wine title in 2020.

Frequently asked questions

What is Black Hills Estate Winery known for?

Black Hills is known for Nota Bene, a Bordeaux-style red blend that became one of Canada's first cult wines. It sits on the warm Black Sage Bench near Oliver and also makes the Alibi white blend and a rare Canadian Carmenere.

What is Nota Bene?

Nota Bene is Black Hills' flagship red, first made in 1999. It blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc into an age-worthy wine. Demand is high enough that vintages have sold out within an hour of release.

Where is the Black Sage Bench?

It is a stretch of sandy, sun-baked vineyards on the east side of the South Okanagan Valley near Oliver, BC. The heat and sandy soils make it one of Canada's best spots for ripening big red grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon.
