The story behind Frisky Beaver

Frisky Beaver is the cheeky side of an Ontario estate grower called Smoke and Gamble, out on the north shore of Lake Erie in Norfolk County. That puts it in Ontario's Southwest, a smaller and less-travelled wine region an hour or so beyond Niagara.

The brand leans all the way into the pun. Badass Baco, Dam Good Red, and Bubbly Beaver are exactly the kind of labels you would expect, and that is the whole idea.

Lake Erie fruit, a wink included

Under the jokes is real cool-climate winemaking. The wines are Ontario VQA, made from grapes like Baco Noir, Riesling, Vidal, and Cabernet Franc grown on the Lake Erie north shore.

Some bottlings use appassimento, drying the grapes before pressing to concentrate them, a nod to Norfolk County's history of tobacco kilns. Frisky Beaver also launched what it calls Ontario's first VQA wine in a bottle made from recycled paper.
