The story behind Meadow Vista
Meadow Vista is a meadery, not a grape winery, and that is the whole point. Founded in 2009 by two sisters on a farm in East Kelowna, it makes honey wine from its own bees and BC-grown ingredients.
Only a handful of BC producers make mead seriously, and Meadow Vista is one of the busier ones. It keeps roughly 100 to 150 hives and turns the honey into a surprisingly wide range of styles.
How Meadow Vista makes its mead
Everything starts with honey from the farm's own hives and other BC sources. From there the styles branch out further than most people expect from a meadery.
The lineup covers traditional mead, fruit meads, a cyser made with apples, a spiced metheglin, a hopped braggot, and a pyment blended with wine grapes. The flagship, Cloud Horse, has taken gold at mead and wine competitions across North America.
Frequently asked questions
What is mead, exactly?
Mead is wine made from fermented honey instead of grapes. It is one of the oldest alcoholic drinks in the world. Depending on the style it can be dry or sweet, still or sparkling, and it often carries the character of the flowers the bees fed on.
What does Meadow Vista make?
Honey wine, in more styles than most people expect, running from dry and traditional to fruit-forward and spiced. Its award-winning flagship is Cloud Horse, which has picked up gold at competitions across North America.
Where is Meadow Vista Honey Wines located?
On a farm in East Kelowna, in BC's Okanagan Valley. The bees and much of the fruit come from the surrounding area, so the mead is about as local as a drink gets.
