The story behind The Foreign Affair

Len and Marisa Crispino fell for Amarone during years spent living in Italy, then came home to Niagara to chase that style. They bought their land in 2000 and released the first wines in 2004.

The idea was simple and a little audacious: bring the Italian art of drying grapes to Ontario. Foreign Affair became the Canadian name most tied to appassimento.

The art of appassimento

Appassimento means drying the grapes before pressing, which concentrates the fruit into something richer and denser. Foreign Affair built its whole identity on the method, one of the first Canadian wineries to do so across the board.

The flagship is The Conspiracy, a bold red made in the Ripasso style, where the young wine is passed back over dried-grape skins. Winemaker Rene Van Ede keeps that Italian influence front and centre.
