The story behind Wooden Gate Cider

Wooden Gate is a Manitoba cidery near Pilot Mound, in the rolling country of the Pembina River valley. Pam and Clint Cavers, who had farmed the land for decades, turned a cider-making hobby into a licensed business at the end of the 2010s.

It is a genuinely rare thing on the prairies: a small, family-run estate cidery pressing its own fruit.

Manitoba apples, prairie fruit

The ciders start with 100 percent Manitoba apples, made in small batches on the family's own land. Nothing here comes from far away.

What sets them apart is the prairie fruit that finds its way in, from chokecherries and saskatoons to rhubarb. The result is cider with a real sense of place, the kind of thing you can only make where these fruits grow.
