The story behind Holland Marsh

Holland Marsh Wineries is a family estate in the Holland Marsh, the rich farming belt north of Toronto near King Township. It was founded by Roland Nersisyan, who came to Canada from Armenia, a country often called one of the birthplaces of wine, and learned winemaking from his grandfather.

The family planted its first vines on the property in 2007, choosing the Marsh for its sandy loam soils and sheltered microclimate. It was one of the first wineries to plant in the Holland Marsh, away from Ontario's traditional regions of Niagara and Prince Edward County, and it is still run by the Nersisyan family today.

Cold-hardy grapes, family winemaking

The estate grows its own fruit on the property, with winemaking led by Roland's son Norie Nersisyan. The plantings lean toward hardy varieties that handle the Marsh climate well, including Vidal, Baco Noir, and Gamay Noir, alongside Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and other grapes.

The wines are organized into the Ephemere and Select ranges, with Reserve bottlings on top. Most are estate-grown, with a few grapes such as Chardonnay brought in from Niagara-on-the-Lake.
