The story behind Sperling Vineyards
Few Okanagan wineries can reach as far back as Sperling. Ann Sperling's grandparents, the Casorso family, were among the first to plant vines around Kelowna in the 1920s, on land the family has farmed for generations.
The winery itself is newer, opened in 2008, but it sits on one of the oldest vineyard sites in the valley.
Organic, biodynamic, deeply rooted
Winemaker Ann Sperling farms the estate organically and biodynamically, and makes the wines with a light, natural hand. She keeps a foot on each coast, making wine here and at Southbrook in Niagara.
The wines to know are the Old Vines Riesling, off fruit planted in 1978, and the traditional-method sparkling wines. There is a long family memory in every bottle.
