What you'll find under $30

A lot of what's here is VQA wine, made from grapes grown in Canada and held to a real quality standard. Reds lean Cabernet Franc, Gamay, Pinot Noir and easy-drinking blends. Whites lean Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. Rosé and a handful of sparkling pours round out the grid, mostly from Niagara and Okanagan producers. Most of it is meant to be opened without a special occasion.

How to choose without overthinking it

If you already like a grape, stay in the same family. Someone who drinks Sauvignon Blanc usually likes Riesling too. Undecided? Pick by region instead: a bottle from Beamsville Bench and one from Naramata Bench taste nothing alike, and trying both tells you more about your own preference than a label ever will.
